Cost-Effective Team Building: How to Get More Value from a Smaller Corporate Event

Cost-Effective Team Building with small team options at Sabre.

Corporate events and team building are changing. Across Australia, many organisations are becoming more selective about where they spend money, how much time they take people away from work, and what they expect an event to actually achieve. Cost-effective team building is the trend.

Smaller events and seeking cost-effective team building doesn’t necessarily mean doing less team building.

It often means doing smarter team building.

Instead of automatically booking large, expensive conferences or multi-day retreats, many organisations are looking at smaller team events, local offsites, half-day workshops and targeted team development sessions.  Many even run great interventions with us at on-site rooms and spaces.

And when designed properly, a smaller event can actually deliver more value, not less.

Smaller Events Can Be More Focused

There has traditionally been a tendency to associate a “good” corporate event with scale.

Big venue. Big production. Lots of activities. Overnight accommodation. Large catering bills.

All of those things can still have their place, but they are not always what creates better teamwork.

For many intact teams, leadership groups and project teams, a carefully designed half-day or one-day session can provide an ideal opportunity to step away from normal work, reconnect and focus on how the team actually operates.  Off-site has profound advantages in terms of novelty and getting people away from established norms, but on-site team workshops can also be highly effective when well selected.

This can work particularly well for smaller groups of 6–30 people where meaningful conversations, practical activities and individual participation are much easier to achieve.

Rather than spending most of the budget on the costs and infrastructure surrounding an event, organisations can invest more directly in the people themselves and what they are doing.

Spend less on the event infrastructure and more on the team.

From Team Building Activity to Team Development:

Fun still matters.

People engage more readily when an event is enjoyable, different and memorable. Experiential team activities can also reveal behaviours and team dynamics in ways that sitting around a meeting table often cannot.

But an activity by itself doesn't automatically create lasting change.

This is where Sabre's approach to team building differs from simply providing games or entertainment.

Since 1988, we have designed and facilitated team building programmes ranging from light-hearted corporate activities through to highly targeted team and leadership development.

Our aim is to match the level of depth to what the client actually needs.

For some teams, a well-designed experiential activity and facilitated debrief may be enough.

For others, we can add a more evidence-based layer using Belbin Team Roles.

Adding Belbin Creates Actionable Team Data

Belbin looks at workplace behaviour and the different contributions people make when working as part of a team.

Using Belbin Individual and Team Reports allows a team to move beyond general observations such as:

“Communication could be better.”

or:

“We need to work together more effectively.”

Instead, the team can explore practical questions such as:

  • Where are our strongest behavioural contributions?

  • Where do we have gaps or overlaps?

  • Are some team members being overused in particular roles?

  • Are valuable strengths being overlooked?

  • How can we delegate tasks more intelligently?

  • Are we using the right people at the right stages of a project?

  • How can we improve communication and role clarity?

The result is team building based on usable information rather than guesswork.

When Belbin data is combined with an experiential Sabre activity, teams can then see some of those behaviours playing out in real time.

That creates a powerful link between insight and experience.

A Practical Half-Day Team Building Format

A cost-effective team development programme does not need to be complicated.

For example, a smaller corporate team building session might include:

Pre-event Belbin profiling

Participants complete their Belbin Self-Perception Inventory and receive Observer feedback from colleagues.

Individual and Team Reports

The team receives meaningful data about individual behavioural strengths and the overall balance of the team.

Facilitated Belbin Workshop

We explore the Team Roles, individual contributions, team strengths, possible gaps and practical workplace implications.

Experiential Team Challenge

A carefully selected and fun Sabre activity gives participants an opportunity to put teamwork into action and observe what happens when the team is placed under time, communication or problem-solving pressure.

Debrief and Action Planning

The team connects what happened during the activity with the Belbin data and identifies practical actions that can be applied back at work.

This entire process can often be easily delivered locally and within a half-day or one-day programme.

Cost-Effective Doesn't Have to Mean Cheap

There is an important difference between cheap team building and cost-effective team building.

Cheap team building focuses primarily on reducing the price.

Cost-effective team building focuses on maximising what the organisation receives from the available budget.

That might mean:

  • choosing a local venue rather than travelling interstate;

  • running a half-day programme rather than a multi-day retreat;

  • using an existing office, conference room or nearby park;

  • working with a smaller intact team;

  • integrating learning into an already scheduled conference or meeting;

  • selecting one meaningful experiential activity rather than multiple unrelated games; and

  • investing in tools and facilitation that generate practical workplace outcomes.

The event may actually be smaller, but the learning can be considerably deeper.

Small Group Team Building in Brisbane, Gold Coast and Across Australia

Sabre delivers corporate team building and team development programmes throughout Australia, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and other regional and metropolitan locations.

Many of our programmes can also be delivered in-house at a client's workplace, at conference venues or as part of an existing corporate offsite.

For Brisbane and Gold Coast organisations in particular, staying local can significantly reduce the cost and logistical complexity of a team event while still creating a genuine break from the normal working environment.

Smaller. Smarter. More Purposeful.

Corporate team building does not need to be enormous to be worthwhile.

In fact, smaller and more focused programmes can create better opportunities for participation, reflection and meaningful team discussion.

The key question should not simply be:

“What activity should we do?”

It should be:

“What do we want this team to be able to do better afterwards?”

By combining Sabre's experiential team building with the behavioural insight available through Belbin Team Roles, organisations can create team events that are engaging, practical and genuinely relevant to workplace performance.

Less unnecessary expenditure.

More focus on the people.
