We’ve been delivering our Picture Perfect painting challenge as a team building experience since 2000, and it’s always a pleasure to see an outcome as impressive as this.
While painting is the chosen medium, Picture Perfect is really about something much deeper – unity of purpose, cross-functional collaboration, effective communication, and the diversity of team roles. More than just simple team building games.
Small teams begin working in isolation, each focused on their own canvas, relying on limited information and operating under tight constraints. As the challenge progresses, they must overcome silos and begin to share knowledge, ideas, and strategies. True collaboration emerges, and the once-disconnected canvasses are ultimately brought together to form a single, unified masterpiece at the final unveiling.
It’s a deceptively tricky challenge. With cryptic templates, time pressure, and limited initial information, success demands high levels of communication, adaptability, and teamwork. The blend and balance of team role behaviours also plays a critical role as the challenge unfolds.
To reach the level of excellence shown in this recent event – delivered by a wonderful group of teaching professionals – takes an extraordinary degree of openness, trust, and collaboration. This was one of the finest examples we’ve ever seen. The team avoided the usual traps and navigated the complexity with grace, skill, and unity.
We will often combine individual and team Belbin reports with this challenge to bring enhanced behavioural awareness to life. These insights offer lasting value and follow-through on how our own unique operating styles will impact our own performance and that of the team, especially when under increasing complexity.
